After 78 years of creativity, I have three tips for both artists and people just starting out.
(1) Put the camera away. It makes the mind lazy.

(2) It helps not to lift the pencil or brush off the paper. Keep your eyes on the subject. Just keep studying the subject. This technique is called “blind drawing”.

The Cornwall Park Mob – charcoal on paper (an example of “blind drawing”)

The Sheep – charcoal on paper (an example of “blind drawing”)
(3) Use any paper available to draw on e.g. brown paper, old envelopes, scrap paper. We all draw better if that is not expensive!

From these field studies it might be possible to reuse lines and ideas to rework onto canvas or rag paper. It won’t be copying, rather a development.
