Here we are, the Moa Egg Artists, at the Morrinsville Art Gallery for the opening of our exhibition which was in March.

Artist Shelley Flower and I were deemed “the smallest,” so we were placed in front – memories of school class photos anyone?! (I’m the one holding a glass.)
Why are we called the Moa Egg Artists, you might wonder? Because we are a rare collective in Aotearoa. We are bound by no single philosophy other than the simple desire to create—whether through paintings, photographs, or jewellery—working alongside one another in the same spirit that draws people together in all kinds of clubs. At heart, our mantra is one of companionship, especially in a world where art so often feels undervalued.
For me, the occasion took on special significance when an old school friend, Julliet Bellingham, arrived at the opening in her wheelchair. She was accompanied by her beautiful daughter—often her caregiver—and a hardworking mother, Katy. Their presence made the day all the more meaningful.
Below are two of my works from the exhibition.

Oystercatchers – acrylic on stretched canvas 300mm x 300mm

My two paintings on the column in the foreground. “Oystercatchers” at the top. “The Absence” below 600mm x 420mm Acrylic on stretched canvas.

Wekas – acrylic on canvas approx 600mm W x 400mm H
No sales were made during the exhibition, and I’m not sure any were expected. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience—escaping Auckland and wandering a town with its own delightfully quirky charm. Morrinsville’s painted cows are impossible to miss, lining the main street. Brightly coloured herd, looking like they were in their own fashion show. A friendly reminder—should there be any doubt—that we are well and truly in the land of cows.

In fact there was yet another life-sized, fibreglass cow sculpture being painted at Morrinsville Gallery while the Moa Collective’s Exhibition was on display. Such a birthplace of creativity! Morrinsville Gallery is well worth a visit; check out their website to see what’s coming up next.
