Sketching Trip to Western Springs

Springtime in Tāmaki Makaurau, armed with a sketchbook, I joined up with a fellow artist on a trip to the Western Springs Park, which is located beside the Auckland Zoo.

We had explored several winding paths before finding a spot beside the lake which a few swans reluctantly shared with us! They had three grey woolly cygnets in their care so their concern was understandable. We were careful though to create as little disturbance as possible – and I quickly got started with my ‘blind drawing” (looking constantly at the subject rather than the paper).

Marion concentrated on the lake and its birds. With the very fine plantings surrounding the area, it made a delightful scene.

Below are my resulting artworks.

Western Springs Hip Hop, September 2026 (blind drawing)

Western Springs Swing (blind drawing)

Western Springs Ballet (blind drawing)
